About this position
The Safety & Security Supervisor serves as a key leader in maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and team members within a hospital healthcare setting. Reporting to the Manager of Safety & Security, this role is responsible for overseeing daily departmental operations and ensuring the effective coordination of safety officers to meet the evolving needs of the hospital community.
As a frontline leader, the Supervisor acts as a positive role model, fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, respect, teamwork, and continuous improvement. They provide coaching and mentorship to team members, guide performance through formal improvement processes, and support disciplinary actions when necessary to uphold quality and service standards.
Beyond operational oversight, the Supervisor contributes strategically by assisting in the planning and execution of departmental initiatives that align with the organization’s goals. They help develop and implement tactics that support the department’s vision and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, internal policies, and quality metrics. Through strong leadership, strategic alignment, and a commitment to excellence, the Safety & Security Supervisor plays a critical role in creating a secure and supportive environment for all who enter the hospital.
Leadership Accountabilities:
•Provides daily leadership and direction, ensuring staff coverage and operational readiness within the department.
•Performs routine check-ins with direct reports, responsive to officers’ requests and needs, provides timely follow-up, and maintains open lines of communication with all department team members.
•Responsible for overseeing department shift schedules, staffing levels, PTO, and LOA/FMLA requests.
•Will be responsible for staffing support as a contingency, as needed.
•Issues organizational keys and acts as a back up to the System Security Operations Coordinator, as needed, for security technology and access controls needs.
•Monitors direct reports’ performance, deliver coaching and feedback, and administers performance improvement plans (progressive discipline) in partnership with HR and the manager.
•Fosters a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative culture through positive professional leadership and aligned focus, messaging, and representation of the department, in coordination with the manager and organizational values.
•Oversee new team member department onboarding, orientation, ensuring understanding of roles, responsibilities, and standards.
•Responsible to coordinate and completing department education, training, and/or drills that cover emergency protocols, safety procedures, and other topics.
•Develops and delivers training programs, to include yearly review of existing trainings and e-learnings.
•Participates in interviewing, evaluating, and recommending candidates for hire and or promotion to open department positions.
•Ensures compliance with hospital policies and applicable regulations (HIPAA, OSHA, DNV, CMS, MDH). Is an advocate to problem solve when errors are noticed.
•Assists in developing, reviewing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with security policies and procedures that align with organizational values.
•Participate in security risk and threat assessments, department audits, and inspections; active participant in recommending and executing mitigation strategies.
•Actively participates in department and hospital huddles, environmental rounding, as well as safety, workplace violence, and care committees.
•Leads investigations of incidents including, but not limited to, thefts, lost and found, vehicle damage or accidents, slips/falls, and workplace violence; gather evidence, conduct interviews, and completing security incident reports, supplemental reports, and Safety Fist Reports.
•Collaborate with organizational stakeholders such as Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Compliance as needed.
•Serve as liaison with law enforcement, fire department, and other external agencies. •Maintain accurate records of operations, security incidents, training/education, regulatory data, and team member data, in partnership with the System Security Operations Coordinator and manager.
•Supervise team member productivity and oversee resource utilization (equipment, systems, supplies).
•Supports daily department functions including shift needs, posting and patrolling schedules, meeting requests, assessments, presentations, and hospital-wide events or initiatives.
•Provide access to security technology record data (surveillance, access control, alarms) for HR or other stakeholders, in partnership with the manager and System Security Operations Coordinator.
•Function as departmental liaison with other hospital departments, clinics, and system stakeholders.
•Oversee completion and accurate record keeping of department safety checks including readiness rounds, panic alarm testing, Code Red drills, inspection of Code Green equipment, and verification of staff knowledge.
•Responds to calls, as appropriate, and supports staffing coverage. Particularly calls for service which involve escalated situations involving violence or combative individuals.
•Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals and objectives.
Requirements
Education
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. • Must satisfactorily complete defensive tactics course within six months of employment, or have documented equivalent training (having occurred within the past twelve months prior to employment)
Experience
• 3+ years healthcare security supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to manage execution and motivate teams to achieve organizational goals and objectives • Law enforcement and/or private security management experience leading and developing staff and safety and security programs.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Life Safety Code
• Military duty may be considered to meet the experience requirement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on fact.
• Demonstrated ability to deal with disruptive situations in line with medical center policy
